The Snug

Two small rooms for one person, with a single bed, a desk under the window and a row of brass hooks instead of a wardrobe. They exist because a person travelling alone should not have to pay for a queen bed they will use half of, and they are priced accordingly.

  • One single bed
  • 130 square feet
  • First floor, side
  • One night minimum

The room

A hundred and thirty square feet, honestly. There is room for the bed, the desk, a chair and a small case open on the floor, and not room for two people to move around each other. We will not put a second guest in one, which is a rule rather than a preference.

What is in the rate, and what is not

The second list is the one worth reading. A guest who books this room knowing what it does not have is a guest who is not disappointed on arrival, and that is worth more to us than a booking we talked somebody into.

Included

  • A single bed with cotton percale linen and a wool blanket
  • A private bathroom with a shower
  • Breakfast
  • A desk with a lamp and a socket at desk height, which the Garden Queens do not have
  • Wi-fi

Not included, and not available

  • A second guest. The Snug is a one-person room and we do not add a bed
  • Space. This is the smallest room in the building and the page says so first
  • A bath, a television or a view of the garden

What this room costs

Three flat numbers move a nightly rate here and none of them is a percentage: the room's own rate, an extra $30 on a Friday or a Saturday night, and a seasonal adjustment on the date ranges below. Add them up and you have the price. Tax is 14.75% plus $3.50 a night and is shown on the booking page on the same screen as the room, not added at the end.

Why the rate changes

Some nights carry a minimum stay. Some rooms and some dates carry a minimum stay. It is applied by the booking engine before you get to a price, and the reason is given rather than implied.

Free until three days before you arrive. Free cancellation until three days before arrival. Inside three days we charge the first night. Same terms on every room, and a cancel link in your confirmation e-mail that needs no password.

The other rooms

The Garden Queen

The Garden Queen

from $164 a night

  • One queen bed
  • Sleeps 3
  • Ground floor
  • Straight onto the walled garden

The four ground-floor rooms at the back of the house, each with a sash window that opens onto the garden and very little between you and it. They are the quietest rooms we have, because the garden wall takes the street noise out, and they are the ones people book again.

About this room

The Parlour King

The Parlour King

from $204 a night

  • One king bed
  • Sleeps 3
  • First floor, front
  • A bay window over 61st Street

Three front rooms on the first floor, each with the original bay window and the deep sills that come with a 1926 house. They are the biggest doubles in the building and the lightest rooms in the morning, and they face the street, which is a trade you should make deliberately.

About this room

The Attic Double

The Attic Double

from $184 a night

  • Two double beds
  • Sleeps 4
  • Second floor, under the eaves
  • A dormer window over rooftops

The three rooms on the top floor, each with two double beds under a sloping ceiling and a dormer window looking over the rooftops towards the elevated line. They sleep four, which makes them the rooms families and pairs of friends take, and they are two flights up with no lift.

There are 2 of these in the building, so availability is a real number rather than a scarcity message. Give the form your dates and it will tell you whether one is free on every night of them.
