Questions and answers

The questions the desk is actually asked, with the answers it actually gives. Where the honest answer is “no”, it says no.

What time can I check in, and what if my flight lands late?

Check-in is from 3:00pm and somebody is on the desk until 10:00pm every day. If you will arrive after ten, telephone before 6:00pm that evening and we will leave a key in a box and text you the code. If we have not heard from you and you arrive at midnight, there may be nobody in the building. This is the single most useful thing to know about staying here.

Is breakfast really included?

Yes, cooked, for every person in the room including children, in the rate. It is served from 7:00am on weekdays and 8:00am at weekends. There is no tray, no voucher and no upgrade to a better breakfast.

How far is Manhattan?

The station is two minutes' walk. The Long Island Rail Road takes about eighteen minutes to Grand Central; the 7 train takes about twenty-five to Times Square and runs all night, which the rail road does not. Both leave from the same platform building at the end of the street.

Do you have a lift?

No. Eleven of the fifteen rooms are up at least one flight of the original 1926 stairs. One ground-floor room is step-free from the garden entrance and is described in detail on the accessibility page. If stairs are a problem, book that room or stay somewhere else — we would rather say so now.

Why is the same room a different price on a different night?

Three things move it and each is a flat number you can check: thirty dollars more on a Friday or Saturday night, and a seasonal adjustment on certain date ranges. The booking page lists every night of your stay with its own price before you enter your name.

Can I cancel?

Free up to three days before the day you arrive. Inside three days we charge the first night. That is the whole policy and it is the same for every room. The confirmation e-mail has a cancel link in it that works without a password.

Is there parking?

Not ours. There is metered street parking on 61st Street and free but competitive parking on the side streets, and there is a paid garage on Roosevelt Avenue about six minutes' walk away. Most guests who stay here do not bring a car, because the station is closer than the garage.

Can I bring a dog?

One dog in either of the two ground-floor Garden Queens, twenty-five dollars a night, arranged when you book. Not in the other rooms and not in the breakfast room. Assistance dogs are welcome everywhere and are never charged.

Is it noisy?

The three front rooms face a street with buses on it and the elevated line is two blocks away. The Garden Queens and Courtyard Twins at the back are genuinely quiet. The building is timber-framed and carries sound between floors. There is a page about exactly this rather than a sentence hiding here.

Do you have a restaurant?

No. Breakfast is cooked here and there is one supper at the kitchen table on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from October to April for up to ten people. Every other night, ask at the desk — there are twelve places worth eating at within four blocks and we will tell you which is which.

Can I leave my bags before check-in or after check-out?

Yes, from 7:00am on the day you arrive until 10:00pm on the day you leave, at no charge. There is a locked room by the desk for it.

What does 'closed to arrivals' mean on the booking page?

That there are rooms free, but we are not checking anybody in that day. If you are already staying you are unaffected. It happens a handful of days a year and every one of them is listed on the page about it, with the reason.

Do you hold a room without a card?

No. A card holds the booking and nothing is charged to it until you arrive, unless you cancel inside the three-day window. We would rather ask for the card than hold rooms that never turn up and then tell somebody else the inn is full.

Is there air conditioning?

Yes, a unit in every room that you control, and a ceiling fan in the attic rooms. They are individual units rather than central air, which means they are audible when they run. The attic rooms are the coolest in the building and the front rooms the warmest.

Can I book the whole building?

Yes: fifteen rooms for one night, from two thousand six hundred dollars plus any space hire. It is handled by e-mail rather than by the booking form, because a whole-house booking is a conversation and not a checkout.

Do you have a television in the rooms?

No, not in any of them, including the suite. The wi-fi is good and most people watch what they want on their own screen. If a television is important to your stay, this is the wrong building.

Not here? Telephone between 7:00am and 10:00pm and ask. The person who answers has been in all 15 rooms this week.

Check availability

Give the form the night you arrive, the morning you leave and how many of you there are. It checks every night of the range rather than the first one, prices each night on its own and shows you the arithmetic before you type a name. If a night in the middle is full it says so and offers you the ranges nearby that do work.
