From the airports
Woodside sits between LaGuardia and the train line to Kennedy, which is why people stay here on the night before an early flight. Here are the routes with honest numbers on them, including the one that matters most: what happens if you land late.
From LaGuardia
About twenty minutes by car or taxi, traffic permitting, and the fare is usually in the low thirties. By bus it is the Q70 to 74th Street and then one stop west on the 7, which takes about forty minutes and costs the price of a single fare.
From Kennedy
About thirty-five minutes by car. By train, the AirTrain to Jamaica and then the rail road to Woodside is about fifty minutes and lands you at the end of the street; the E and the 7 with a change at 74th Street is cheaper and takes about an hour and ten.
From Newark
An hour to an hour and a half by car depending on the tunnel. By train it is the AirTrain, then to Penn Station, then the rail road or the 7. Budget two hours and do not book a tight connection.
If you land after ten at night
This is the sentence that matters more than any other on this page. The desk is staffed until 10:00pm. If you will arrive after that, telephone us before 6:00pm the same evening and we will leave a key in a box by the garden door and send you the code. If you have not spoken to us and you arrive at midnight, there may be nobody in the building.
We are saying it this plainly because a small inn is not a hotel with a night porter, and a guest who assumes it is has a very bad night. There is no charge for a late key and no limit on how often you can ask for one. All we need is to know.
The desk closes at ten at night. Check-in is from 3:00pm and the desk is staffed until 10:00pm. Arriving later than that is fine if you telephone before 6:00pm the same evening; arriving later without telling us may mean nobody is here.
Early flights
Check-out is 11:00am, but you can leave your bags with us until 10:00pm on the day you go at no charge, and the parlour and the garden stay open to you after you have checked out. For a flight before breakfast, tell us the night before and we will leave bread, fruit, yoghurt and a flask of coffee out for you rather than nothing.
